In a desperate war for Earth's survival, against an unrelenting alien enemy, the only way to defeat them is to become one of them. Earth is under siege by the Strogg, a barbaric alien race moving through the universe consuming, recycling and annihilating any civilization in their path. In a desperate attempt to survive, an armada of Earth's finest warriors is sent to take the battle to the Strogg home planet. You are Matthew Kane, an elite member of Rhino Squad and Earth's valiant invasion force. Fight alone, with your squad, or in hover tanks and mechanized walkers as you engage in a heroic mission to the heart of the Strogg war machine. Battle through early missions as a deadly marine, then after your capture, as a marine-turned-Strogg with enhanced abilities and the power to turn the tide of the war.
 
  • Arena-style multiplayer that allows players to play as Strogg or Marine in deathmatch, team deathmatch and capture-the-flag modes
  • Fight alongside other marines in both small squad missions along with large, epic battles
  • Diversity of combat with indoor and outdoor environments along with mechanized walkers and hover tanks to pilot
  • Battle through the early portion of the game as an elite marine, then after your capture as a "Stroggified" marine with enhanced abilities
  • Built on ID Software's revolutionary Doom 3 technology, Quake 4 also features fast-paced multiplayer competition modeled after the speed, feel, and style of Quake III arena.
 
Weapons
  • Gauntlet - Very short range melee weapon consisting of a spinning saw blade. (Available in multiplayer, replaces the Blaster)
  • Blaster (Not shown in Quakecon) - Low damage pistol, can be charged up to do more damage, it is not very powerful, but has a flashlight attached to it.
  • Machine Gun - The starting weapon in all multiplayer maps, a full auto rifle. The Machine Gun has a flashlight attached to it. (The gun will be upgraded through out the game [double clip size])
  • Shotgun - A devastating close range weapon (will be upgraded through out the game [faster reloads])
  • Nailgun - A slow firing yet high damage weapon (will be upgraded through out the game) (rate of fire and target lock-on capability [when target is locked-on, the nails will guide themselves to the target])
  • Grenade Launcher - Launches grenades which blow up upon impact or after 3 seconds
  • Rocket Launcher - Launches high damage rockets at a quick rate (will be upgraded through out the game [laser sight homing rockets])
  • Hyperblaster - Fires blue plasma balls at a very high rate of fire (will be upgraded through out the game [plasma balls can bounce off walls and hit the target by ricochet])
  • Railgun - Shoots a high damage, ultra high velocity slug (leaving a beam-like glowing trail). Recharges about every 2 seconds, has a zoom mode so it can act as sort of a "sniper rifle" (will be upgraded through out the game [increases power output allowing slug to penetrate multiple targets])
  • Lightning Gun - Continuously fires a medium-damage stream of energy at target (will be upgraded through out the game [can damage multiple targets])
  • Dark Matter Gun - Hurls a slow-moving yet incredibly high damage and large radius dark matter ball. In its trajectory, the dark matter ball sucks enemies insides the ball and destroys them. Weaker enemies won't be sucked in, but simply vaporized into bloody gibs.
